０．研究会前史

・１９９４年６月２２日来日中のスコット・スロヴィック教授が広島大学に来学され、広島大学社会科学研究科国際社会論専攻の学生に、講演「ネイチャーライティングについて」を頂いた。

その後日米の学者数名とのゼミナー「On Ecocriticism」があり、この会がエコクリティシズム研究会の実質的な始まりとなった。

「エコクリティシズム研究会」でSherman Alexieの小説、Reservation Bluesを読む

夏休みの恒例行事となった「エコクリティシズム研究会」は、今回で早くも第14回目の開催となった。台風10号の直撃が懸念されたが、当日(8月９日土曜日)は朝から天気が回復し、会場の広島大学千田キャンパスには、会長の伊藤詔子氏、副会長の吉田美津氏をはじめ14名の顔がそろい、Sherman Alexieの小説Reservation Blues(1996)と、論文集The　Greening　of　Literary　Scholarship (2002)を輪読し、有意義な意見交換がなされた。

AlexieのReservation Bluesについては、最初に横田由理氏によって作家の略歴・作品の特徴、そして物語の舞台となったスポケーン・インディアン保留地について地理的説明と解説がなされた。偶然にも小説の舞台となった場所は横田氏がアメリカ留学中に滞在した町に近く、横田氏の体験を踏まえた解説によって物語をより一層身近に感じることができた。その後、各章の担当者がストーリーをまとめ、コメントを加えた後、参加者全員による討論がなされた。物語は民族の歴史や社会との密接な関わりがあり、研究会で知恵を出し合い物語を読み解く作業は、絡まった糸を解く楽しい作業であった。また、この本はロックバンドの物語として音楽に関する事柄が大きな要素となっており、この点で音楽に造詣の深い辻和彦氏や末中篤君のコメントは、小説に込められたロック、ブルース、ジャズなどのネイティヴアメリカン的混淆の音楽性を理解する一助となった。この小説はエスニック文学の可能性の焦点となっている文化混淆的アメリカ性がポストモダン性をうみだす中心的要素である。後日、思いがけずAlexie自身も録音に参加しているReservation Blues Original Sound Trackを発見することが出来たのも研究会での意見交換に負うところが大きい。

午後からはThe　Greening　of　Literary　Scholarshipの13本の論文について、それぞれ担当者の報告と意見交換があり、最新のエコクリティシズムの評論を短期間で読み漁り見識を深める密度の濃い時間であった。会の終了後の懇親会では、次回の研究会で取り上げる作品と論文集についての話し合いもあり、Susan CooperのRural HoursとISLEの論文集The Isle Reader: Ecocriticism,1993-2003 が候補としてあげられた。また、城戸光世氏が中心となってまとめた本会のこれまでの活動記録も披露された。さらに、メンバーの多くが参加した論文集、『新しい風景のアメリカ―Toward a New Ecocritical Vision 』(10月に南雲堂から出版予定)の出版記念会を今秋に開催することも決まった。
